Background

The app for Industrial Design mentorship will target those users that want to learn more about specialty areas and skill sets. It’s often challenging to seek out mentorship for this industry because it is so specialized and there is a lack of platforms where you know an industry expert would be willing to help.

User problem

  • The user doesn’t have a source to receive mentorship within specialty skill sets. Such as; Industrial Design and categories within ID: Furniture, Electronics, Sports Equipment, Appliances, Home Goods etc. Footwear/Accessories.

User goals

  • Connect the app with Industrial Design societies - IDSA,  Women in Industrial Design, Unif-ID, etc.

  • User can video chat and mentors can conduct live demos

  • Create a page for online training/classes

  • Connect with Industrial design In-person events

Audience

  • Career transitioners (not in design, but interested)

  • Lifelong learners (already a design professional)

  • Explorers (design students)

User objectives

  • Understanding WHY users access this platform.

  • What functions & features are needed to achieve learning goals?

  • Incorporate various types of learning strategies

  • Income stream generated by booking sessions, memberships, live classes.

Is there a need for industrial design mentorship?

As a User, I  want to stay current with industry standards & skill-sets

As a User, I want to attend in person ID events

As a User, I need some mentorship for my career goals

As a User, I want to further my knowledge in X and Y

As a User, I want to connect with other industrial designers

I interviewed 4 SME’S on a potential ID mentor app. They were under three personas, either “lifelong learners” “career transitioners” or “the explorers”

Here is what they had to say….

4/4 participants would be interested in using a mentorship platform

4/4 participants want to learn new categories in ID, keep up w/ industry trends & emerging technology

3/4 participants would love live feedback on projects or portfolios

4/4 participants had difficulty finding a mentor in ID/were ghosted

The user will have multiple opportunities to book the same mentor through this user flow with access to session mentor notes 24/7

What do our mentees need access to?

10 SME’s participated in a hybrid card sort, our quantifiable data.

Interaction usability for prototype

The test was taken by 5 SME’s, broken up into three parts:

Task 1:

Search for an upcoming video chat session with Zoe

Task 2:

Select the chat icon and chat with Zoe and choose your uploaded file then open the video chat window

Task 3:

Go to the video chat and select to view your model in 3D

What were the results?

5 out of 5

5 out of 5 participants knew where to click to go to video chat session
5 out of 5 participants stalled when asked to click on the file in the chat

3 out of 5

4 out of 5 participants were confused about dragging up the video chat to open the screen
4 out of 5 participants wanted to close out of the 3D view but couldn’t find the “close” button

2 out of 4

2 out of 4 participants thought their screen was freezing when loading to go to the 3D view page

Task 2 had the most challenges, as the participants were unsure where to click because the uploaded file did not look clickable and the chat conversation did not support the action.

High level overview for revisions

Convert uploaded file to a clickable button

Add a “close” button so the user can close out of the 3D model view

Offer a help icon to implement arrow tutorial for iphone swipes

AR low immersion design video session

Video chat flow, interaction, & revisions

ID mentorship is a very niche field that could offer mentorship to many types of personas. We have proven that there is a need to learn about specialized skill sets within ID & what makes our platform unique is that you can chat about your 3D models live by using AR in video chat.
